MEETING OP THE COUNCIL. DIFFICULTY REGARDING MINUTES CLEARED UP. A meeting of tlio Fetone Borough Council was .held last evening. there were present the Mayor, (Mr J. W. MeEwan); and Councillors C. P. Brocklebank, J. Chur chouse,- M. Ford, R. HJones, W. May, A. Anderson, D. Bedingfield, G. Cook, and 11. A. Hartley. In respect to the couftmiation or th© minutes of June 27th, which was 'held, up hy the council on account of a point of order raised by Councillor Jones not being inserted, was overcome by the minutes being amended. The Mayor said that he had taken upon. himself to instruct the ; clerk to insert the words referred' to. # Councillor Hrockleban.lt said that the standing orders did not permit the Mayor or any member of the cpuncil to enter anything in the minutes except by the unanimous sanction oi the council. The Mayor replied that when the point of order was raised he did not give a ruling, t and the clerk therefore was not called upon to make an entry in the minutes in respect to it. Points of order which, were made by way of interjection could not ’be considered. MUNICIPAL BOWLING GREEN. A deputation, representing the •Central Bowling Club, waited upon the council in respect to their position re* gardiug the use, by the club, of the municipal green. The club was desirous of the council putting up a pavilion oa the ground, failing which the ciuo offered to erect a pavilion, provided the council allowed the ciu-b J&I6D per year for upkeep over a stated period. At a later period the council informed the club that the borough finances would not allow of any but absolutely necessary expenditure. It was decided to allow the dub to make ns© of timber contained in a building belonging to the council, purpose of improving their position, and to give them the use of the grounds on the same terms as last season. FOOTBALL MATCH. Officials of the Petone Football Club waited upon the council and asked foi permission to use the recreation ground on Saturday, July 30th, in order to play a game between Petvn© and Poneke representative teams. Mr W. Donovan said that the match, in question would be a great draw, and the club thought that it was only fail to the citizens of Petone that the game should be played on the borough ground instead of at ' Wellington. The Rngby Union was approached in respect to lht± matter and met tlio club m an excellent spirit. The earae was to have been played on August 6th, but a letter had been received from theJßußbv Union that the members of the New Zealand tem were to assemble Dunedin on August 6th. and in order that the teams might meet at full strength it was proposed to play the match on Athletic Park on J,uly 30th, the proceeds of the cate to be divided between the several clubs and the insurance funds for injured players The union was, however, desirous of meeting the club in every way possible, and an understanding was come to that provided the Petone ground could be secured for Saturday next the match would be played at' Petone. The. League had the use of the oval that day, but ■was prepared to forgo its rights. The council granted the request, and decided to offer the union 50 per cent/ of the net gate takings. MISCELLANEOUS MATTERS. W. T. Christensen, of Nelson street, claimed the sum of <£6 for damage done to his property through flood water. The matter was held over pending receipt of an opinion from the municipal solicitor. In Teply to inquiry from the Petone Council &s to whether the members of the Citizens' Band played at a certain function held in Petone, the secretary of the band stated that it had played.at the function referred to as private citizens. The members had a perfect right to do Jones' said that he was responsible for the question being put to the band. The Mayor had stated it was not the * members of the citizens' Band who played at the. function in question, but members of 'the Workshops Band. The answer showed that his statement was not a reliable one. The Mayor said Councillor Jones had no justification for his statement. Several tenders were received for the iamplighting contract, and a final re- 4 commendation is to be made at a later date. An offer was mad© bv* the Roster Company, Wanganui, to treat a portion -of the Hutt road with tar provided the council prepared the thoroughfare for the receipt of the restar.
