AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS 4 BIG CROWD AT TOWN HAT A 4 TOURNEY. INTERESTING BOUTS. 'There was a big crowd at the Town Hall last night when the Wellington amateur championship tourney was commenced. There were some willing' bouts during the evening, and a few of th* lads showed fair boxing ability. THE FEATHERWEIGHTS. CHARLE S'" BROOK. P. (Charles and R. Brook, featherweights, Boxed three rounds, of which Charles had decidedly the best. He attacked from the start, and landed well with straight rights. He scored well in the first round, and in the second sent Brook down for the count with hard lefts to the body. FALLEN I v. CLINTON. ! H. met J'. / fClintdinf Falleni waa the heavier,*-and he forced the fighting. Many lefts were loosed at Clinton, but they all missed. In the second round Falleni drove Clinton through the ropes, but Clinton's evasiveness beat Fallem. Clinton .got the verdict. BRACE v. McGREGOR. * F. McGregor, who usually gets matched with someone too big for him, had the ill-luck to strike a snag in A. El Brace. Braeo was far too fast and severe for the - plucky McGregor and gave him a bad hiding Frequently Brace landed ■left, right, left. AH his hits had sting in them and before the limit of the second- round McGregor -was vety groggy. He came up well in the final round only, more Jraniahment. Brace SEMI-FINAL. The most interesting match, of the evening was the bantam semi-final between Charles -and Brace. Brace was aggressive / from the start, but Charles was cool, elusive and clever. The fierce onslaughts Brace launched with evil intent on either hand would have rattled most boys, but Charles kept his eye on Jus man throughout, and by good footwork and a clever pair of hands nullihed many of Brace's best efforts. Robinson opened the lightweight contests. The bout was marked by somewhat crude boxing, and m the opening round the attempts of the contestants to hit each other were vain, but in the second round Sorter appeared to gam an advantage. He began well in the third and final round, but toward the brush Robinson got him several times with swings to the head and face The decision went to Robinson. NAN KEYILL® v. THORBJ3. The round was one mostly of in-fighting and there was no direct hitting except in the final round, when Nankevilie landed a fmr light ones. Nankevilie scored heavily in the In-fighting, and ripped a ot of solid ones to Thorpe's body. Nan. keville got the verdict. MURPHY v. (McCARTY. A bright and willing mill was that'between F. Murphy and F. McArty. They went from the word go till, when the referee stopped them in the third round they were both thoroughly done. McArty held his own m the opening round, but in. the second Murphy's long swings dealt with him severely, and he was once through the ropes. He went to his corner groggy, but came out-very game in the last round and pluckily continued the fast and willing bout, in which he ■took a fair amount of punishment. Toward the end'of the round the referee stopped \the fight and declared Murphy the winner. The crowd gave the pair a great ovation. The boxers were so willing that when the gong went at the conclusion of ,the second round neither noticed it, and both fought merrily on. McGregor v„ king. S P. McGregor, who had been, beaten earlier m the evening by Brace. Was later matched with D. J. King. In height they were ill matched, King being much the taller of the two, but McGregor got the veidict. WEIGHTS. . BRICKMAN v.CUPTON. B. Brickman,'and ~R. Upton opened the bantam bouts with an. interesting contest. Upton opened cleverly, but Brickman was the' aggressor all through the second round and had Upton on the retreat most of the time. Upton came in to fignt in. the third, bu-b Brickman weathered the brief storm, and from ,on had Upton beaten. Levy fought a go that wa* even m the first round, hut in the second Levy showed hinujolf a better boxer than the more aggressive Kelly. The decision was In favour of Levy.

Tangney ended in favour of Daley, The house rocked with laughter throughout the 'bout and playfully hooted the decision. * THE FINAL 8 The finals to-night should be an even greater attraction than the contests decided last tveuing-. The contests in the 7st and 7.8 classes and the middle and heavyweight championships will be decided. There will be a large number of bouts, and patrons are promised an excellent evening’s entertainment. At the conclusion of the tournament the team will be selected to represent Wellington at the championships at Greymonth, commencing on the 2f)th instant.
