DEFAULTING UNEMPLOYED

ARRANGE FOR COUNTRY WORK. BUT FAIL TO TURN UP. A peculiar feature in connection with the unemployment problem (writes the “Times" Auckland correspondent) is the fact that while large numbers of men arwefeeking work there are some who undertake to go to relief work in the country but do not put in an appearance at the time of departure. The Government Labour Bureau lias experienced difficulty in this direction more than one*. Only eleven men out of nineteen engaged for work in the Thames district took advantage of * tho source of employment. It almost makes one wonder if some of the man are really anxious to get back into harness. It might be that the men hold the same opinion as some prominent Labour leaders, that the wage offered for ’ relief work i& not sufficient, but nevertheless tliie would surely not justify them making arrangements to go to tjie country and default at the last moment. There are plenty anxious for work, and genuine cose« are penalised as the result of this pracfcic©.It would appear as if nearly n.l) the immigrants whe arrived by the Ruahime have rr berth,s" to go to, for few applied to the Government Labour Bureau for work. Labour leaders -have been addressing the new arrivals on labour conditions in. the Dominion, housing, etc.
