GROWTH OF THE CITY
BRIEF STATISTICAL REVIEW. EIGHT YiIARS’ - PROGRESS. An interesting statistical review of the changes that have taken place in the city since his advent'to the Mayoral chair in 1913 was made by the late Mayor (Mr J. P. Luke) at the Mayoral installation ceremony yesterday. Mr Luke said he was satisfied that as far as the city was concerned it was progressing with great rapidity. The most pleasing -feature about its affairs was that during his term of office the revenue had increased from £451,000 per annum to £1,078,000 per annum. The capital value of the city when ho becamo Mayor was . £19,000,000; to-day it was £25,000,000. The population had been increased very largely through the amalgamation of suburban areas; it bad risen from 66,000 to 90,000.
