HOSPITAL LEVIES
A kairanga protest. “YOU ARE ROPED IN.” (Special to the “N.Z. Times.”) Air D. Oollis, of the Kairanga County Council, made a vigorous protest at Thursday’s meeting of the Hospital Board against the board’s levy, pointing out that sinefe the last meeting, ’at which 1 the council had struck their rates, notification had been received that, owing to the valuation of the county being increased, the county’s contribution would be raised also by £IOOO-. Several other members supported the protest against the big charge per head of population made on the counties as compared with the towns. Air Nash; The trouble is, you are roped,in, and you have to face it. Mr U. W. Smart, while agreeing that the levy was hard on the county councils, did not think that the estimates for expenditure could be reduced. The board intimated, that, under the circumstances, it would be impossible to make a reduction.
