(By “Carbine.”) The jumping: season opens at Ha\rera to-morrow. Old Waimatao was backed down to something approaching a Gloaming price when he , won at Blenheim on Saturday. He had been galloping well np the line, and his trainer regarded hi? success as a certainty. Silk Hein was a long time notching a win, but when she made a start slie ran up two firsts and a second in her three attempts at ■ Marlborough. The well-known racecourse detective, Mr S'. Kraetzer, has resigned his positions with various New Zealand clubs, and in a few weeks will leave for Australia. Mr Kraetzer is one of the beet-known figures on New Zealand courses. For the last twenty years he has undertaken the important, and sometimes unpleasant, duty of keeping the courses free of the element whose presence is notf desired. The improved state of affairs to-day is a tribute to his work. How many clubs he has served in this capacity one cannot say, but the number is large, and the fact that he was engaged by a great majority of the clubs to whom his sendees were available speaks volumes for the success he made of the business of ridding racecourses of undesirables. It is understood that most of the work formerly done by Mr Kraetzer will be undertaken by Mr E. Scott, until recently a respected' and popular detective in the New Zealand Police Force. No man in New Zealand has the wide knowledge of the "crooks’’ that Mr Scott has. Warawee and Erin’s Isle were given a schooling lesson over the hurdles at Wanganui the other day. Warawee cleared out from the Maniapoto gelding, and gives promise of making a good hurdler.

There was not much material to work on at Blenheim, but Handicapper Henrys secured some good finishes. The big race each day was won by" the narrowest of margins. All Mr W. G. Stead’s, team are spelling. The Hawke’s Bay owner will begin next season with a team ot fourteen. First Line, Thrace, Capsal, Slow--coach, Old Gold, Rathlin, Oakleigh, Khartoum, Tenacious, Maninhera, Fisher, Luperino, Gladful, -Omahu, Ngata, Hylans, and Powder King have double engagements in the Great Nortlferns. Sweet Memory was paying a wonderful price when. Waimatao beat her on Saturday. As it wps she returned more than the winner did. ' Mr W. J. Tristram has resigned his office of secretary to the Eltharn Racing Club. While being schooled over the big fences at Ellerslie on Saturday morning, the Ipirse Peer Rosa fell at the first fence of the double, and Mollyroon at the water jump. J.’ Roach, the rider of Peer Rosa, had his collarbone broken, and after receiving attention from Dr. Grant in the ambulance room on the course, was able to proceed to his home. H. Haigh, who was' riding Mollyroon, got a very heavy fall, and Dr. Grant ordered his removal to the hospital immediately. The Otaki Maori Racing Club is to be warmly congratulated on its list of nominations, which constitute a record for the club. .Practically four hundred nominations have been received, as follow :—First Day—Maiden 31, Flying 29, Steeplechase 23, Cup 27, Otaki Hack 19, Taipun Handicap 25, Birthday Welter 25. Some time ago word reached Australia to the effect that Major McCalmont had refused an offer of 100,000 guineas' for Tctratema. .It now appears that a mistake was made. In the December number of the “Blood Stock Breeders’ Review” the • matter is referred to. Inquiries show that the Major was under the ! impression he had received a firm s offer of the sum stated, and gave publicity to it, but the gentleman who was supposed to be willing to pay that vast amount of money for Totratema denied that he had authorised the alleged offer. Many racing men here who bavo heard of the success on the Indian turf of Mr M. Goculdas, who purchased the English colt Caligula for 8000 guineas, with a contingency of £3OOO if the colt won the St. Leger, whicji he did in due course, will be interested to learn that that sportsman has never been in England. Air Goculdas belongs to the Bhatia caste, descendants of the Rajputs, the members of which are forbidden to leave India. (Mr Goculdas is a very successful business man in Bombay, where he ranks as the biggest cotton mill owner, and races purely for the love of the sport. Speaking yesterday with reference to the GamiDg Act, the Minister for Justice (the Hon. E. P. Lee) 6aid' that the operation of the law, as amended by Parliament last year, would be carefully watched, with a view to noting the degree of success attained in the suppression of the bookmaker. If necessary, Parliament would be asked to consider any alterations which might be considered advisable if the law were found to be weak in certain pointe. RACEHORSE DESTROYED.
