LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS
INITIAL MEETING OF NEW COUNCIL.
The initial meeting of the newlyelected council for the' borough of Lower Hutt was held in the Council Chambers last evening. The Mayor (Mr E. P. Rishworth) presided, and the following councillors made the declaration of office—Councillors A. J. West, A. J. Hobbs, W. T. Strand, W. Cotton, W. R. Dempsey, J. Brasell, W. G. MeJdrnm, J.' Mitchell and A. Mcßain. The Mayor, in his introductory remarks, stressed the fact that they had a difficult year before them. He received from the councillors congratulations on his return to the Mayoralty unopposed, and assurances of their whole-hearted support. < A letter was received from the secretary, of the Wellington, Automobile Club, requesting that a representative of the dub be allowed to take the speed of the motorists passing through the Hutt “traps” during race days. It was resolved to" accede to the request on the understanding that the club’s representative does not interfere with the council’s officer. The Wellington Education, Board wrote requesting the erection of notice boards warning motorists to observe a moderate speed in the immediate vicinity of schools. It was decided to request the Wellington Automobile Association to supply the , 'boards, which will he erected by the council. The tender of H. S. Langdon to attend to the Post Office clock for the next twelve months for the sum of £2O was accepted. A vote of condolence with Mrs Griggs, in consequence of the death of her husband, the late Mr George Griggs, was passed.
