HARRIERS

THE OLYMPIC CLUB. The usual weekly run of the above olub was held, in conjunction with the Stop-Out Club, from Island Bay, where a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. Tho Olympic Club turned out 43 strong. The course, an ideal one laid by R. F. Osborno and A. E. Sceats, led towards the Red Rocks as far as the “run-round,’’ then up the gully for about a mile, thence across the hills to Island Bay, a distance of about 6J miles. The run in resulted in E. A. Shaw, T. Crosby, and H. Kerr finishing in that order. The thanks of the clubs are tendered to the proprietors of Cliff House Tearooms, where a most enjoyable afternoon tea was partaken of. Next Saturday the novice race will be decided at Lower Hutt Park, where a keen contest will be fought out between the younger members. WELLINGTON HARRIERS. The above club held its weekly run from the Seatoun terminus, there being a good muster of runners, the paper being dispensed with. The paok, in charge of C. Rowberry (vicecaptain), went around Seatoun and VVorser Bays, then going over Wonser Bay hills ana getting on to the Miramar straight, well known to harriers, where a race took place, trying some of the new members out, then running over the course, where the novice race is to he run next Saturday. A handicap, run in over the last half-mile, resulted:—A. Hill, 100yds, 1; R. Esau, 75yds, 2; R. Mowbray, 40yds, 3. The novice race is to be held next Saturday from Miramar terminus. There are good entries, and a good race should be provided. The officials are:—Judges, W. H. Bennett, A. S. Hilliker, and C. D. Morpeth; timekeeper,. W. H. Pollock; number steward, T. Farrington. BROOKLYN HARRIERS. On Saturday, at the Petone racecourse, the novice handicap was contested, seventeen competitors facing the starter, Mr A. C. Mitchell. The course, which was laid by Messrs W. Burk and A. Mitchell, started from the grandstand, and, proceeding round the racecourse for about 600 yards, left the track and cut away to the north, making a detour back to the racecourse, which enabled the spectators to witness the last 400 yards of the race. Coming into the home stretch, A. Barclay was leading, with W. McGowan fast pulling up, but 200 yards from the finish Barclay sprinted away, and the race resolved itself into a determined finish for second place between McGowan and W. P. Shorland; the made a very game effort, but just failed by a yard. The pace was remarkably fast for a novice race, and the form exhibited by some of the competitors augurs well for the future-of the club. Prior 1 to the race the members not eligible to compete ran over the course, arriving back in time to witness the race start. The thanks of the club are due to all those supporters who assisted during the afternoon. ,

SCOTTISH HARRIERS. The Scottish Harrier*; tried their run at Miramar on Saturday, some twenty runners participating. Owing to the strong wind Wowing, the paper was dispensed with, the course followed being the same as for the five-mile championship. In anticipation of next Saturday's race the pack was divided, the “slow pack” being in charge of Captain S. Hall, while A.’Cflapham acted as pacemaker for the ‘Vast” pack, which conceded five minutes’ start. The gap between the packs was closed before reaching the straight for the run home, a handicap run m being held over the last 600 yards. The lead was taken early in the race by Campbell Dawkins, but he failed to stay the distance, a gruelling finish against a strong head wind resulting in a win. for A. W. Page (10yds), with H. Knowles Smith (10yds) second, and J. B. Anderson (ecr) third, J. Brown and L. Dawkins being in close attendance. As showing the revived interest taken in crosscountry running this season, it is worthy of note that of the twenty runners participating in this run, eighteen are novices. The club is holding a two-and-a-half-mile novice handicap at Lyall Bay next week, some twenty-five entries having been received. The introduction of so much new blood into the harrier ranks should make it an interesting contests SILVER CUP. FOR SCOTTISH HARRIERS. A splendid silver cup has been presented to the club, and it has been decided to allot it for annual competition as a memorial to the late “Boh” Ballantyne, the club'a first champion and runner-up in several snccessive provincial cross-country championships to tho late “Darkie” Byrne.
