AT THE THISTLE INN

NATIVE IN THE BAR. POLICE CHARGES PALL. Charges preferred against Michael McEnroe, licensee of the Thistle Inn, at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Mr E. K. Hunt, S.M., wore that he permitted drunkenness on his premises, sold liquor to an already intoxicated person, and supplied liquor to an already intoxicated native. Giving evidence, the native said he had gone into the Thistle Inn, being drunk before he did so. On entering the bar he had walked to the counter and picked up a glass of beer, and without paying for it, drank it. Mr O’Leary held that in view of this there was no evidence to support the charge of “selling” liquor or of “supplying” it to the native. Michael McEnroe said on the occasion in question he and a man named Beveridge were serving behind the bar. Up to the time the police came in he had not seen the native. The Maori had probably picked np the glass from the counter, out ho had not been served by witness. Charles Maltby gave corroborative evidence as to what happened in the bar. George Beveridge, who was serving in the bar at the time, also corroborated the evidence of former witnesses. John Henry Johns and William Sharpe gave similar evidence to the effect that the native was not served by anyone in the bar.
