INAUGURAL COMPETITION rUBLIC SERVICE AGAINST ALL WELLINGTON. LATTER'S NARROW WIN. Yesterday a competition, between teams representing' tbe Public.* .Service and teams chosen from flic various clubs m Wellington was held. The match was tlie first- of its kind that has been held in Wellington, a-nd proved highly successful from a social as well as a playing standpoint. Tor some years post tho Public Service ‘has held an annual tournament, on »?t. Patrick’s Pay amongst departmental team*, and yesterday a more comprehensive scheme was undertaken, when bowlers who aro employed in the various Government departments issued n challenge to play teams representing the various clubs m the Wellington bowling centre. Altogether 66 rinks, composed of four 'Players each, were engaged in the content, and twelve greens were occupied. All the contestants were members of bowlclub?, and the games were so arranged that each played on tho green oi the club to -which he belonged. In the aggregate ’the margin of points between tfi* teams was small; thev were:—All Wellington 675 -points, Public Service 670. , . , ... The high wind which prevailed throughout the afternoon made accurate bowling practically impossible, but- despite this drawback there were some very close contests. The Public Service- teams were ’successful on the Wellington Johnsor,ville, Ivelburn. and 3<handailati greens, and the Wellington teams on ■the others with the exception of harori where the scores were equal.
