SHIPPING LOSSES
SUBSIDIES FDR GERMAN OWNERS. Ail--' -"’—- - --‘ v v ' - ' --intion. (Received March 17, 10.55 p.m.) LONDON, March 15._ The Reichstag voted to subsidise shipowners.
A cable message received early in the month stated: —The Government has agreed to pay German shipping companies 4,700,000,000 paper marks compensation for vessels lost in the war in addition to sums already paid. The value of the ships is 7,000,000,000 marks in gold. At least 90 per cent, of the money must be spent on new construction. The communes must build 2,500,000 tons of shipping in a decade.
