The bush fires have been extinguished by heavy rain after sweeping through almost the whole of Gippsland with devastating effect. They were the worst since the great fires of 1898. women and children had to be taken into the towns for safety. Many districts hail all tho communications cut and tho township of Foster was only, saved with difficulty. A railway train at Beech forest caught fire and was compelled to continue at full speed until water was reached, ivlu-ii the fire was extinguished. Although the damage i, extensive, details so far are meagre.
