COMMITTEE’S INQUIRIES INTO TOP-MAKING SCHEME.

The Profiteering Committee has been Investigating tlio top-making trade. The basis of examination was the books of five firms. The committee says the average profit for 1912 was under a halfpenny per pound: by 1919 tho profit was ninepence, which was reduced to sixpence. After deducting tho excess profits tax, the percentage of net p'miils oil the capital employed increased fnc!! 15 Tier I'ent. in 1912 to .99 • per < out. in 1919. after deduction of excess profit-. The committee adds: ■ ‘Top-making is highly speculative.”
