Poole partnered Kavanugh, aud a rxseful partnership ensued. After opeiuug scratchily Poole became aggressive, and runs came rapidly. Kavanugh was giving a rare exhibition of running between the wickets. The two wickete fell quickly. but another partnership between. Gilbertson and -Hamilton took the score c.n to 74. Both men played good cricket. The wickets again fell fast, but tho last wicket >tand by Vetrio and Bogue, two colts, produced some bright cricket. Hornibrook bowled splendidly, but the other bowlers were not very difficult. Southland’s innings lasted for fOU minutes. The Australians opened well, Richard•on and Bogle playing patiently and correctly. Liddieutt and Xampard followed Bogle, and thev batted brightly, but Bichardson, who was almost stonewalling, was hard to shift. His 3D runs were made in 61 minutes. About this time Mcßeath, who plays for New Zoa land in the first tost match, was taken off tho southern end, where ho had taken no wickets for 26 runs. "With the breeze behind him he kept a beautiful length, and bowled in brilliant style, taking four wickets, including Ransford’s, for 25 runs. The last wicket nartnership between Ironmonger and Hornibrook wa* a spectacular display. Both men went for tho bowling, and although they wore missed several times thev added nearly fifty runs to the score. The- Australians batted for 2$ hours.
