AN OBJECTIONABLE FOWL-RUN. Complaints have recently been mah to the City Council concerning a fowl run ixi,the neighbourhood of Abel Smith street, which nas been pMKiig a nuisance to residents of that area. A deputation waited on the City Council last evening and actively protested the menace. " ~A whose property abuts upon the fowl run; described instances of mness, diphtheria in particular , which had occurred in the neighbourhood on account of the nuisance. Bhe herself had lost a son from diptherin while the trouble had been going on. ' The inspectors had reported that the ownera of the run. were within the cKjr bylaws. Th* dwellings adjoining the fowlrun were also infested with .rats, and it had been found impossible to keep the rodents down. The nuisance was described by the spokesman of the disputatio n as a menace to the district, and it was hoped the council would do soWithirig- to do away with the menace caused to the residents. ’ , The Mayor (Mr J. P. Luke) said that it. was the duty of the council to deal with the rat nuisance, and if it were found possible to proceed against the responsible persons unddr the Public Health Act they should do so. Failing action under the Act the city solicitor -was authorised to draw up a bylaw empowering the council to close the run.
