FELLOW COUNTRYMEN
WELCOME AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS. There was a happy gathering at the Oddfellows' Hall last evening when the members of the Australian Club extended. a cordial and enthusiastic -welcome to the Australian cricket which is visiting New Zealand. In the absence of Mr F. W. ivicholeon, president of the club, the chair* was token by the vicepresident, Mr W. J. Ddmanson. f In addition to the guests of the evening amongst others present were Mrs Nicholson, wife of the president. Mr Roy Johnson (secretary of the Wellington Cricket Association) and members of the Australian Club executive. The chairman, in welcoming the visitors, said that the members of the club had great pleasure in meeting their fellow-countrymen. They were, he said, typical son© of Australian ©oil, and a number of them were well known to many of those present. The Australians who had made their homes in the Dominion had been cordially received, and tie could assure the members of the team a right royal welcome wherever the> went. (Applause.) They were all members of a great Empire, and whether they be New Zealanders or Australians they were extended the hand of brotherhood in whatever _ British country they elected to sojourn in. (Applause.) In conclusion, he wished the team, on behalf of the • club, success throughout their tour. During the evening the following contributed to a vocal and instrumental programme arranged by Mr A. OaJcey:— Piano solo. Mr J. Sfceddon; song, Mr AO&key; recitation, Mr W. J. Edmanson; song, Mrs S. Hempton; song, Mr H, Phipps; song, Mrs Rene Goyder; song. Mr Liddiout (Australian team); violin solo, Mr Spiro; song, Mr H. F. O’Neil. were dispensed by a committee of Indies, and the function concluded with a dance.
