TWENTY-TWO MILE BEAM

LIGHTHOUSE LAMPS FOR FAR EAST. The beams of two lighthouse lamps, which will eventually guide mariners in Far Eastern waters, gleamed over the Midlands of England from the works of Messrs Chance Brothers and Company at Smethwick recently. - The apparatus, which was being given a trial, has been constructed to the order of the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs, one set being destined for Dodd Island and the tother for the Shantung Promontory. The Dodd Island lamp has an intensity of beam equal to 331,000 candle-power, and will be visible for 22 miles ’distqnt. The other lamp will be seen from a distance of 25' miles. Beacons for the guidance of navigators by air are being produced at the works haring a risibility of from IS to 20 miles at an altitude o€ 10.000 feefc_
