March 5th —N.Z. Cham p i onsli ip s, Auckland. MarciK 12th—Combined Local Clubs, Basin Reserve. March 17th —Otaki A.A.C'. WELLINGTON PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. -. What a treat is in store to-day for all lovers of true sport, for at the Basin Reserve, commencing at .2 p.m., the amateur championships will take place. Not a dull moment will he found during the whole afternoon, for the programme is so arranged that one event follows another in quick succession. The spectators will have a clear view of all events, as all not acting officials will have to remain seated during the afternoon. The rain of yesterday has improved the track considerably, and some record times can be looked for. The stars of the meeting from a spectacular point of view are H. E. Wilson (of Olypmic fame), and C. Hi Taylor, of Christcqprch. The latter arrived yesterday morning, and is in excellent form, and being a first-class runner should be worth the price of admission alone, to' see him compete. H. E. Wilson (a real Wellingtonian), who fifst gained hurdle honours while a student at Wellington College, is now hack in his best form, and should give a fine exhibition of the latest style of
hurdling. A. Jackson, the ’Varsity crack hurdler, is down to compete in the 440yds hurdles. Ho has been training hard up in the Uannevirke district during his vacation, and should win this event. t'. Nesdale (our present half-mile champion), from Jvimbolt-on, has arrived in town, and expects to repeat his lass year’s performance. N. A. J. Barker (100yds champion in 1919) has entered in the sprint events, and may cause a surprise. The University Club looks to X,. A.
Tracey for S points—a second in the 100yds and first in the 220yds. Those who were present at last year’s championship meeting may remember the great finish in the threemile event between A. Wyeth (Waitarapa) and D. Todd (Wellington). This -year it is bound to be a treat to all those present, for it is hard to forecast the winner of this event, when such tried athletes as A. Wyetb, I>. Todd, R. Bell, W. J. Burk, and J. W. Scatchard are competing. The centre is to be congratulated on adding two bicycle events to the pro- ' gramme, as these events are sure to ' be appreciated by the spectators. A special word of praise is' due to the cycle competitors, as they are all making the trip from Mastertom .at their own expense. The Senior Cadet events have filled extremely well. There are 45 competitors in each race.
Boy Scouts are reminded _of their championship event, for which post entries will be received. As a guide to intending patrons, I will give some of the times of starting of the main events: —One’mile, at 2.35 p.m.; 220yds, at 3.5 p.m.; 120yds nnrdles. 3.15 p.m.; 880yds, at 3.30 p.m.; 440yds hurdles, 3.50 p.m.; and 440yds flat, at 4.35.p.m. The sports will start at 2.15 p.m. sharp, and finish at 4.50 p.m. The final event on the programme, the championship relay 'race, is causing keen rivalry amongst the competing clubs, and should prove one of the most interesting items on 'a real firstclass programme. Miss Bleibtrey (world’s champion swimmer) has been invited to be pre-' sent at the sports.^ The MoVilly Shield will be presented by Mr B. W. HcVilly (president of the Wellington centre) to the winning team at’the conclusion of the sports. ' The Pollock Cup (880yds), Guise Cap (100yds), and Bannister Cup (440yds) will also be presented.
