QUESTION OF RIGHT OF APPEAL

At yesterday's meeting of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce consideration was given the following communication from tho secretary of the Canterbury Chamber of' Commerce : i am directed to forward the following resolution passed at the meeting of this council for your consideration: "AVith reference to the Discharged Soldfeir,' Settlement Loans Bill, this council, while still protesting against the system of compulsory loans during times of peace, which has been perpetuated in clause 6 of the bill, further strongly protests against the omission of the right of the citizen to appeal to the Supremo Court from the decisions of the official Board of Appeal contributed under the clause. This council refers the Government to subnections 13 and 14 of the corresponding section 26 of the Finance Act, 1918 (No 2), and o«k6 that tho provisions for appeal to the Supreme Court contained therein be inserted in clause 6 of the present bill, if, in spite of protests, it is still determined to adhere to the principle of compulsory loans during times of peace." Mr W. Stuart Wilson moved that the resolution from Canterbury bo endorsed. The Government should have power to bring the. Act into operation against companies and individuals who would not contribute' to the loan, but' there should be a right of appeal. . ' The motion was carried.
