AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHY

WELLINGTON SOCIETY EXHIBITION OPENED YESTERDAY AT Y.M.C.A. The third annual pictorial exhibition of the Wellington Amateur Photographic Society commenced at the Y.M.C.A. Concert Hall last "evening, and will ho open to the public for the rest of the week between the hours of 10 a.rri. and 9 p.m. daily. The exhibits, both in number and standard, show much improvement upon .those of last year, though there are notably fewer entrants from Australia; this is no doubt due to the restricted shipping facilities, and the unfortunate clashing n-ith other photographic exhibitions. The pictures are mostly the work of local photographers, and several are of outsanding merit, and much superior to anything- that has previously been seen at the society's exhibitions. There are some 160 exhibits altogether. The official opening ceremony was performed last evening by the Mayor (Mr J. P. Lmke), the society's patron, who referred in eulogistic terms to the work the society was doing in encouraging art. Ho also commented upon the utility of photography during the war, emphasising its importance in the reproduction of enemy positions in model form, and referred to the popularity of jphotography as a hobby. The judges of this year's competition are Messrs Nugent Welch, J. E. Ellis, andE. W. Huut, who have made the following awards in the various sections :
