THE PROHIBITION ISSUE
POSITION IN NEW SOUTH WALES. Tho Sydney “Daily Telegraph” states that it is unlikely that a poll on the question of liquor prohibition will be taken in New South Wales next year. To phviat© such a poll, legislation will be necessary/ and it is understood that in due course the Government will submit the necessary amending bill to Parliament. The fact is that the Government is hard pressed for finances for public works, without running tho risk of having to spend £7.000,000 or moie in liquor trado compensation. The State Premier, Mr Storey, when questioned on the subject last week, would not state anything beyond that he had informed the temperance people, who wished to assist in the anti-liquor campaigns in Queensland and Victoria, that if any poll were taken in New South Wales it would not be before March of next year. - •
