TJie Scales barque Rona was taken out to the stream at Wellington yesterday, preparatory to sailing for Newcastle. Owing to the Wairau bar being shallow, the steamer Wairau will leave Wellington to-day for Picbom, instead oi Blenheim. ... A matter that has been considerably discussed among seamen of late is that of captains' reports as to seamen's characters on their discharge- forms. On each form there is a space for tho captain to certify as to tho seaman's character for conduct,, for: ability, and for sobriety. A stipulation, printed on each form states that wbf nan does

not require a certificate as to his character he can decline to have his discharge endorsed by the captain. A section of the seamen are in favour of combining to deoline .any endorsement as to their character on their discharges. Many arguments have been brought forward by the men in favour of this combined i-ro-cedure. ______ ULIMAROA FOR SYDNEY. . Tho Huddart-Parker Company's interstate passenger steamor Ulimaroa is to leave Wellington at noon to-morrow for Sydney and Hobart. R.M.S. TAHITI. ■ The Union Co.'s R.M.S. Tahiti, due at Auckland on Friday morning from Vancouver via ports, is to leave the northern port oh Saturday for Sydney. AYRSHIRE IN PORT. The Federal and Shiro liner Ayrshire arrived at Wellington last night from Liverpool via Panama and Auckland, and berthed at the King's wharf to discharge part cargo. The vessel is to leave here to-morrow week for Lyttelton and Dunedin. WEST CAMARGO IN PORT. The steamer West Camargo arrived at Wellington yesterday at 4.10 p.m. from San Francisco via Auckland, and berthed at Ivo. 1, south (outer tee), Queen s wharf, to discharge generai cargo and about 35,000 cases of case oil. Levin and Co. are the local agents.
