DISSATISFIED WITH DAMAGES
I SLANDER ACTION REOPENED. The plaintiff in the recent £IOOO slander action, H. R. Cooke (Dr. Barnford, instructed by Earl, Kent, and Massey), land agent, who was awarded £5 by a jury sitting under Mr Justice Cooper at the Supreme Court, against F. W. Manning, senior (Mr Dickson), for alleged slander, has "filed a motion for a new trial. The ground upon which the motion is based is that the damages awarded were insufficient, having regard to the evidence adduced at the trial.' It will bo recalled that' the words complained of were stated to ,_ have been uttered by the defendant "at a meeting of tho directors of the New Zealand Quick-silver Mines, Ltd., and consisted of an allegation against tho plaintiff in connection with his dealings with the Grafton Picture Company.
