SUBMARINE MISHAP
CREW'S STARTLING EKPERI. ENCE. RESCUED AFTER MANY HOURS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. WASHINGTON, September 4. The crew of the American submarine S 5, which met with an accident off tho Dolaware River, was rescued. The Navy Department has received an interesting account of the accident. The submarine made a dive of 165 feet of water. A large valve in tho airtank failed to close, and admitted a_' large quantity of water to the living spaces, and the boat went to the bot'tonv.'"" The crew closed tho valve and expelled the water, whereupon the - stern lifted above tho water and the bow remained at the bottom. The storage batteries' gave out fumes, and the crow began to drill, a hole. ..The air was very foul. The steamship Atlantus, twenty-five hours later, ' saw the stem of the submarine, and a shirt was seen waving through tho hole. The Atlantus pumped ait into tho submarine, and sent out wireless .messages. Another steamship 'etood by," and its engineer worked for eight hours with a 'hand tool, and cut a,- hole large enough, to release the crew, who were suffering from the effects of the bad air. '
