"THANKSGIVING DAY"

A SUGGESTION FOB, NEW ZHALAND.

It has been the custom of the Early Settlers' Association for . some years past to celebrate the*'- anniversary of Dominion Day by a winter reunion. In view of the fact that this year the "dav"—September 26th—falls on a Sunday, Mr J. B. Jenkinson, who takes such a live interest in the affairs of the association, has asked his committee to make an attempt to mark it in the calendar as a day analagous to "THanksgiving Day" in. America. With that end m view ministers of the churches have been approached, and so far appreciation or, and sympathy with the movement have been expressed. Mr Jenkinson intends that a. further effort be made to enlist the approbation, first, of all ministers of religion, and then of the populace; then to extend the efforts of the association to the whole Dominion, with the idea of creating a Dominion Thanksgiving Day. The suggestion is that on September 26th, and on the nearest Sunday to that date in years to follow, that ' the services in each church on September 2tith bo made a special service of thanksgiving, or, failing that, some reference in the discourse be made to the many apparent reasons we have for the good work of our pioneers, sustained by the blessing of God, in founding our colony 80 years ago; and the many continued blessings since, up to our obtaining the status of Dominion."
