CONTROL OF RAGING

WILL THERE BE LEGISLATION? QUESTION RAISED IN HOUSE. “Will the Prime Alinister give the House some idea whether he intends bringing down .some legislation' this session with tho object of controlling racing?” asked Air W. E Parry (Auckland Central) in tho House of Representatives yesterday.. The hon. member urged that tho Government should give the country a lead in the matter, and avoid involving the Dominion in a serious industrial upheaval. Trouble, he said, had taken place on board tho Alokoia last night at Lyttelton, the firemen refusing to sail while Sir George Clifford (president of the Racing Conference) remained on board. He psked the Prime Alinister also to note that the constitution of the Racing Conference was not in any way by law, yet it arrogated to itself the right to impose certain very hard restrictions on those engaged in the occupation ; and, seeing that the men had no legal redress, it at once became, ho contended, a serious concern for the Government to deal with. _ Air Alasaey replied # that, while bo regretted the occurrence retorted to by the hon. member, so far as he know the Government had no intention _of amending the laws governing racing during the present session. He . did not speak definitely, however, because Cabinet had not yet considered the matter. He hoped that the trouble would soon be settled, because the present position was not crcflitablc to any of those concerned. .
