CHESS NOTES

THE WELLINGTON CLUB. The members of the Wellington. Chess Club have had a busy time during the last fortnight, a large number, of tourney and ladder games having been disposed of. In the tourney for the club championship Messrs Foully, :S. Gyles, ana W. B. Mason all won from Felling, G. P. Anderson won from Fouhy and also from McNair, Godtechalk drew with W. Mackay and won from Lee, Purchas won from Jessup and drew with McAair, Faulknor drew with W. E. Mason, won from Leo and lost to A. ML Gyles, and Purchas also lost to A. W. Gyles. Mr B. J. Barnes, the club champion, ha« not yet played any of his fixtures. Messrs G. I\ Anderson, A. W. Gyles, and b. Gyles are leading, with Messrs W. L. Mason, Godtschalk and M.. Mackay in close pursuit.’ A largs number of games have also been got off in the annual handicap tourney to decide possession of the “Pewierick” trophy and other prizes. Ih« best tallies to date are as follow Kev. Braddock 5 wins 2 losses. Gyles, sen.. 3-1. H. Jessup '-H—L Barnes 2i—li, and Messrs W. H. M'hite, ML C. White, S. Fahlknor, and E. S. Taylor each 2—l. Ladder matches have been won by Mrs Gyles and Messrs Bock, Gyles, sen. (a matches)," <3: P. Anderson (who takes rung 7 from Fouhy). E. S. Taylor (two matches), A. ML Gyles (who gained the verdict in a stubborn bout with Godtschalk for rung 6), F. Grady, Dornbusoh, M'ring, and Rev. Braddock. In the match for rung 5 H. I>. James (defender) and'A. W. Gyles (challenger) have each scored one game to date. The present tally is also "one all" in the match Clutten v. Jessup. , , Correspondence is passing between Dunedin and Wellington on the subject of the annual telegraphic match. The Otago Chess Club wishes to reduce tie number of boards from sixtoeen to twelve, to retain the present unsatisfactory Eoll-Kiescritzky system of rotation, and to play without a time-limit they have lost their clocks. As the Canterbury Club is vllling to lend clock* to the Otago Club there should be no difficulty on that head. The Wellington Club is anxious to revert to the English notation, but would probably give n-av on that po' T 'l if the English notation (which would give the operators less work) is tried at one of the twelve boards.
