BATHING ACCOMMODATION

PROVISION AT LIAM, BAT. REPORTED ON BY CITY ENGINEER. A report was submitted to the City Council by the city engineer (Mr W. H. Morton) with reference to the bathing accommodation at Lynll Bay beach. The baths and beaches com. mitteo imported that it had authorised repairs to bo carried out to the ladies’ bathing shed. The chairman and Councillor Thomson would consult with the city engineer with reference to the provision of temporary accommodation for next season. The engineer stated about six weeks ago one of the heaviest southerlies expriened at Lyall Bay caused considerable damage to the ladies' bathing shed, which was noir in ar bad condition and will- require *o be immediately put in order before the coming bathing season. The only satisfactory way of dealing with the public requirements was bv the erection of a largo building capable of being subdivided into small compartments for the use of which a charge should bo made. Such a building could be constructed with a flat roof and used os a stand for the purpose ot viewing aquatic sports, and could bo approached by a gangway and steps from the footpath level. A building of this description would require, in order to meet public demand, accommodation for about ,W 0 bathers of both sexes. One good sized building would present less obstruction to tho yiew of pedestrians than the presept sheds, which had been built purely to meet requirements in the cheapest amd easiest possible manner. A building such as proposed would, however. cost probablv .£BOOO. His proposal was on the'linos of what ho . harmed "ocean bathing establishments’’ in America, some of which wore exceedingly- elaborate; Some years ago a evil cm o on similar linos was prepared and- plans submitted for th« opproval of the council. Such a scheme might »till .he considered satisfactory except that the accommodation then proposed would require to bo increased.
