BOYS’ INSTITUTE

ANNUAL MEETING THE MAKING OF BOYS INTO GOOD CITIZENS. The annual meeting of the Wellington Boys’ Institute was held last evening. Brigadier-General Richardson presided over a good attendance. . PROUD OF OUR SOLDIERS. The chairman said he was in deep sympathy with the institution in the work it. was carrying on. Had one been in England and Franco during tho war, ho would have been proud ot the behaviour of the New Zealand soldiers. There were no belter behaved, or finer men. in any of the theatres of war than the Now Zealanders. The New Zealand boy was a very fine boy indeed. Such institutions, as this inculcated a spirit of comradeship, a regard for others, a spirit of helpfulness that was so necessary if wo were going to make the world better than it was before the war. To occupy the spare time of soldiers who went to the front the authorities had put various ideas into effect, mostly aiming at teaching good citizenship. Tho boys of New Zealand did realise what a lovely country they had, and how good it was .to he a portion of tho British Empire. If the institute helpsd to keep the boys fit, it was doing a good work for tho Empire, for it was only the fit who made good soldiers. If tho work ot the institute was not being sufficiently recognised', ho would like to bring it under notice. HELPING THE BOYS. The president of tho institute (Mr G. A. Troup), remarked, in a brief address, that the Boys’ institute catered for boys and boys only. Greater temptations were placed in the way of •boys than in the way of any other section of the community. The institute stood for everything that would help the boys physically, mentally, and spiritually. They aimed at turning out well-balanced, fair-minded boys. Thu finances during the year had been satisfactory ; they closed the year again with a balance Accommodation for a number of boys earning small money was found, hut the hostel accommodation would need to be increased, ajid a building would have to be erected on a section which the institute had securod. , Mr James Hislop said that one of the finest features of the work of the institute was the spirit of brotherhood which was inculcated. He had been interested to find 1 that about 200 of tho boys of tlm institute had fought in the war. ’ There was ample evidence of the good work done, and one evidence was the very few institute boys who ever cams before a court. Much ot the good work done was done by the ladies who were supporters of the institute. ■ Mr T. Recce, of Christchurch, also spoke of the good work the institute did. The balance-sheet showed the receipts to have totalled -£4499 18s 3d; £56 had been written off for depreciation, and £596 had been transferred to tho accumulated assets account.
