WITNESSES FEES
TEN SHILLINGS PER DAY
In the Gazette appear new regulations increasing . the scale of payments to witnesses in criminal cases. Ihe amount is increased from 6s to 10s a day. Witnesses at cot oners’ inquests will also he paid the same sum. The fee for coroners or justices, other than salaried stipendiary magistrates, holding an inquest is raised from one guinea to two guineas, and the. mileage from 1b to Is 6d. The fees wore reduced many years ago during* a time of retrenchment, and •‘hey are now restored to the maximum amount allowed by the Act. Tho Act, it is understood, docs not permit of the increasing of the fees to medical witnesses without further legislation. Tho new scale of payments is now in operation.
