BATHING FACILITIES
THORNDO'N ENTHUSIASTS TO PUT THEIR CAaiii. For twenty-two years residents of Thoindon havo enjoyed the' privilege of sea bathing within tho •connnes of tho well-known structure on Thomdoii Esplanade. The progress of the city and the consequent reclamation of that portion of tho harbour in the vicinity of Pipitea Point, have moved tho Ciiiy Council to close the baths, in view of early dismantling. The erection of tepid baths has been mooted, but the idea has apparently found little favour with the swimming community.
it is pointed out that itepid baths afo a poor substitute . f<)r. invigorating sea-water .bathing,''anil to-morrow night a deputation will interview tho City Council and ask for the construction of baths on ithe harbour foreshore adjacent to tho Thoindon quay tram terminus, where, it is contended, an excellent site could bo' secured. A member of the proposed deputation informed a "Times" roporter that tho unsuitability of tho present bathit is renowned for tho constant ingress of flotsam and jetsam—lias caused a great set-back to swimming in the northern end of tho city. Many, including tho schools, have refused to use the oaths on account of their condition, and*tho result has been long journeys to To Aro baths. From a health point of view alone the aggrieved ones claim consideration, but in addition tho deputation will stress thefalling off of swimming proficiency in tho schools. The council will bo urged not to immediately close tho present baths.
