TUNNELLERS’ STRIKE
TROUBLE IN NORTH AUCKLAND. DEMAND FOR HIGHER WAGES. PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, March 22. Advico that the tunnelers engaged at the Huaru tunnel on the Norui^Auckland Main Trunk railway have ceased work was received to-day by the Auckland Railways League. It was stated that the outside men were still working, but wore in sympathy with the strikers. It is understood the men have determined not to resume until demand for 16s a shift for tunnellers and 15s a day for railway workers ! is conceded. The men engaged on the work at the tunnel previously struck m 1917, and the strike lasted twelve months. . , , The question of the rates of labourers’ pay in the Public Works Department was considered by Cabinet yesterday morning, and-it was resolved to raise the ordinary labourer’s wage a shilling a day—that is to say, from 12s to 13s a day.
