DAY NURSERIES

A WELLINGTON SCHEME CITY ASKED TO PROVIDE THE HAND. A deputation, from the Citizens’ Day Nursery Society waited on a committee of the City Council yesterday and asked whether they would recommend the council to allow a day nursery to bo erected on one of rhe city reserves, and also if enough land could be- allowed to provide a playground for tbe children who would be ieft at tlio nursery. The deputation consisted of Mcsdames A. Gray, von Haast, Levy, Lester, and Miss Ruth AVallaco. In tho absence of Mrs J. P. Luke, Mrs Gray was spokeswoman. Mrs Gray briefly outlined the scheme for a day nursery, which, she said, would be of incalculable benefit to others with children. Unfortunately, many mothers had to go out to ■ work. Some tried to take their children with them, hut this was often unsatisfactory. Some left them at- home or made other arrangements. If a day nursery were established, .mothers whom necessity drove tn work could their little once in the hands of people who would feed ana care for them till they were called for.

Then there wore the many motheis who required to go shopping and had no one to leave their children with. To carry the children about made shopping a drudgery, if not'an impossibility. These mothers could «Iso leave their children at the nursery for a while. The chairman of the committee (Hr G. Frost, acting-Mayor) said that tba committee would consider the matter and report to the City Council at its next meeting. AN “EVER-OPEN” NURSERY. Mrs Gray stated afterwards that the term “day nursery’’ was used preference to “creche,” which gave the idea of charity. The present scheme was that those mothers who could afford to do so should pay a reasonable charge, biit that the .nursery would •be ever open to the children of those who could not afford to pay. The comroiuee of the society are anxious to get money as soon as’possible, and citizens who care to help may forward donations to Mrs J. P* Luke, to Mrs A. Gray (secretary), or Miss Ruby Wallace' (treasurer). It is prdbable that a day for the raising of funds from the public will be soon arranged.
