Gore, seconded by Mr G. A., Lawrence, upon his having teen appointed 'director of the Christchurch -School of~Art. The post, which carries a salary of, £7OO a year, was described by Mr Gore as “probably th© most important" 'art position in New Zealand.’^

The death occurred at Wellington yesterday of MV Robert Boott, at the ago of 76 years. The late Mr Scott, who was Very, .well known in the Now Zealand coastal service, was born in Scotland and he came to tills ,country about 40 years ago. At different times he served in the engine-room staff of tile Union Company's steamers Mawhera, Dingadee,. and Mararoa, and on the Huia, the Duchess, and numerous other vessels. He retired from the sea about 20 years ago, and had since lived in Wellington. - Mr Scott was twice married, and he loaves a family of two daughters'and one son, all of whom live in England. The funeral will take place, this afternoon.

Alderman William Patrick Fitzgcn aid, who was elected Lord Mayor of Sydney afo.w days ago, is a native of Sydney. He was born in Essex street, in 1864, and is now in his 66th year. _ Ha is not regarded as having extreme views on industrial problems. Alderman Lambert, whose chances of selection were thought to be admirable, was passed over at the last moment by the caucus because he was the representative of the Australian Workers’ Union which does not represent all shades of Labour oninion.
