MASTERTON MEETING BED MB BON WINS AUTUMN ' HANDICAP. ASTINO.ME THE BUYING. (Special to the “Times.") The autumn meeting of the Masterton Racing Club was held at Opaki on Saturday. The weather was fine ■and a successful gathering eventuated. The totalisator, which is often a good indicator, registered £23,573 Ids for the eight events, which is £521(5 more - than was put through a year ago. Rain had fallen on two nights prior to tho meeting and had taken the sting out of the course, which, however, was in nice order. There was some fairly good racing, but most of the fields were small. Favourites and second favourites won sis races, and tho Ibiggest dividend of the day was paid by' Raceful in the Juvenile Handicap- The principal event fell to Rod Ribbon; the Wellington Cup winner won as she liked in lino

style. The open sprint fell to tho Trentham mare, Astinome. During the afternoon an inquiry was held into the falling of Galore and Parorangi in the Telephone Hack Handicap. It was found that Galore got on to tho heels of a horse in front of her, fell and interfered with Parorangi, but that the occurrence was accidental. The finding added that an examination of the course at the place where Galore fell showed the track to be in good order. A. number of visitors went up from Wellington and this side of the hill, and numerous complaints about the railway service were heard. It was nearly midnight when the return train reached the city. FORTUNE TELLER BEATS CELMISIA. A dozen maidens were saddled up for the opening event, the Trial Stakes. Fortune Teller' and Celmisia were made favourites, and Kildee was well backed. Sir Wai gave 1 trouble at the start, but eventually a _ good release was effected. Silk Rein rushed to the front, followed by Fortune Teller. At the turn Fortune Teller was in charge, and a little later Kildee moved forward. Fortune Teller had the race well won at the distance, but a good finish for second place . was fought out hy Kildee and Celmisia. Fortune Teller won by four lengths, and Celmisia beat Kildee on the post for second place. Gold Pan was fourth and Ladv Pan last. MISS GOLD WINS EASILY. Cashmere, # Glentour. and Pakaraka were withdrawn from the Telephone Hack Handicap, leaving a field of eight. Tho good-looking Miss Gold was • installed a hot favourite. Tho start was excellent, but in less than a furlong Miss Gold hit the front, and Orawia, who began quickly, dropped back a little. Lady Witchett dwelt on the mark, and was loft several lengths. Miss Gold led all the way, and won comfortably by two lengths from Mosthenes. who was a length and a half ahead of Probate, tho second favourite, who was unlucky. Orawia was fourth and Stutter fifth. During tho running Galore and Parorangi came down. T. Pritchard, rider of Galore, was severely shaken, and* J. Olsen, rider of Parorangi, was rather bady knocked about. THE OPEN SPRINT. A one-dividend field contested tho Flying Handicap. The Wairarapaowned Chimera was favourite, and Astinome was heavily supported. Astinome shot to the front at the rise of the harrier, and was never headed. She was not ridden out in the straight, and won by a neck from Chimera and Torfreda) who dead-heated. RED RIBBON’S DECISIVE VICTORY. The chief event of the day drew another small field, only five ’ parading. Dainty Step, who bad never before been over the distance, carried a lot qf the money on the machine, and was sent out favourite. Red Ribbon was next in demand. At the start Rose Wreath led for half a mile, when Multaine and Dainty Step moved to the front. At the turn into the straight Red Ribbon ran up to the leaders, and soon taking charge won easily by five lengths from Dainty Step, who was two lengths in front of Multaine, with Rose, Wreath fourth and Wishful last. RiACEFUL ACCOUNTS FOR THE JUVENILES. Still another small field went to the post, when the Juvenile Handicap came up for decision. This event saw a hot fayourito. in the Trenthamtrained Canyon beaten after she had looked sure to win a furlong and a ] half from home. Canyon.was the first • to hit the front, and she established a ; good lead, followed by Riouso. Can. yon was first into the straight', and a ; little, over a furlong from home appeared to, be going easily, but there * Raccful, began a run, which he sustained well, and landed a winner by three-quarters of a length from Little i River, who cut Canyon out of second place hy a neck. Riouso was fourth. A GOOD FAVOURITE BEATEN. 4 Hallowvonia was mad© a pronounced J

favourite in tho Masterton Hack Handicap, but tho Trenthara filly, though she finished well, had no chance with tho winner, who, well handled by A. J. McFliun, took charge before the straight was entered, and won very easily by half a dozen lengths from Stutter. HallowVonia finished with a good run, and just failed to head off Stutter. Probate was fourth. AFFECTATION PAYS A GOOD PRICE. The Stewards’ Handicap, which on paper looked a good thing for Affectation, brought about a surprise. Affectation was all right, but tho dividend he returned, instead of being remarkably small was particularly good. No description of tho race is needed, beyond saying that Affectation won from end to end, and passed tho post three lengths ahead of Scornful, who beat Matatua by a length. Penury Rose, who finished last was favour- | ite. FINAL EVENT GOES TO A FAVOURITE. The meeting was concluded with the Dash Hack Handicap, which was run over a five-furlong course. There were only seven starters, but it was a great betting race- For a good while Timidity and Import had an interest, ing duel for the position of favourite. Sweet Memory and Prince Randall carrying totals almost as big. In the finish large sums came for Sweet Memory, and the top weight wound up favourite with the other three evenly backed. The race proved a good thing for the favourite, who, meeting a weak field, took charge at tho bottom of , the straight and won by a length from Import, with Timidity close up. Prince Randall was fourth. THE RESULTS trial stakes. Of 125 so vs; five furlongs. 1— W. Bradford’s ch f. Fortune Teli ler, 2yrs, by Bezouian —Sea Queen, 7.2 (R. Reed) I' 2J.
