TRAMS OR BUSES?
PALMERSTON’S DILEMMA. A heated controversy is being conducted* in Palmerston just now on the rival merits of tramways and omnibuses. The Borough Council has submitted a proposal for a loan for the provision of tramways, and a section of the community demands that ’buses shall be provided instead. From the point of view of a progressive township, aspiring to become a city, the argument would appear to be in favour of trams, more particularly as electric current will be available in a year or so from Mangahao. But when it comes to the question of utility, remarks the “Wairarapa Age,” the ’bus has everything in tts favour, for it can serve whole of the township at a comparatively small cost. In a centro like Palmerston, the tramway system would only serve a portion of the community. The portion that would not be served, but would still be called upon to pay, is naturally in favour of something from which it would derive an advantage. If the proposal were being submitted to Masterton, we should unhesitatingly plump for tramways, but this township is not built on the tame lines as Palmerston.
