POST AND TELEGRAPHS

MEMBERS’ COMPLAINTS.. CLASSIFICATION OUT OF DATE. AUCKLAND, March 20. Amongst the numerous complaints made by the various branches of the Post and Telegraph Service is one from the lettef-cArriers re the present system of classification. By a recent reclassification, officers of this branch of the service, who were receiving 1170 last ybar, were advanced to £2OB, and otherj who were on £IOO went no to £130.i The former are asking why they were hot advanced to £225, and the latter put forward a query: “ Where does the £45 rise come in?” The temporary officers who have not been considered to date are trying for another 1* per day. Members contend that no married officer should receive less than £4 per week.

In consideration of the present system of classification the men State that it is Out of date, and has served its usefulness as far as the general division is concerned. They contend that when an officer has served his five years’_ service he should go on to the maximum of his class as others do in private employment. Cases have been cited of officers, including men returned from the front, with upwards of ten years’ service to their credit, and only receiving £156. The operators, are also complaining of the long hours they are having to work.
