YACHT RAGE

TURNBULL MEMORIAL CUP. WON BY WANDERER. The contest for the Turnbull Cup, presented to the Port Nicholson Yacht Club by the late Mr Alexander Turnbull, at one time commodore of the club, was held Satturday afternoon. A light, northerly wind and a moderate sea made the conditions ideal for yachting, and those who watched the progress of the contest from the decks of the harbour ferry steamer Duchess, specially, engaged for the occasion, were not only rewarded with a close finish (the first five yachts finishing within two and a-half minutes) but with a brilliant spectacle. The Wanderer, which won the race, sailed a very dogged and determined race. The course, about 16 miles, was from Clyde quay, outside Jerniugham Buoy, lo Pinnacle Buoy, off Seatoun, Koro Boro Buoy, Jernngham, and back to the starting line. At 3 p.m. a flying start was made by the nine competitors, the Rover being first to cross the line, the rest of the fleet following from, five lo ten seconds later. Most of the yachts had loading jibs and gaff topsails set, and presented a great sight on the way to Jerningham, At this buoy the Waitangi was slightly in tho lead, Marangi being close up. Wanderer lying about fifth. Waitangi immediately broke out a spinnaker, but the wind, coming well out from the west, prevented her from making Pinnacle Buoy without jibing and Marangi, which had held on to her leader, was first around the second mark. Kotiri rounded about seventy seconds later, with Bona, Ailsa. Wanderer, and Viola, the same time astern. At this stage the wind freshened, and on tho beat up to Koro Koro the Waitangi immediately opened out from the rest of tho field; Marangi and Kotiri soon came about on the starboard tack to work the smooth water on the Karaka Bay eide of. tho harbour. Bona, however, continued on the port tack and made a great board up to Somes Island, but in doing so was at a great disadvantage, having to sail through a very lumpy sea. Wanderer was bowling along in wood style, putting in some splendid windward work. Waitangi • was the first boat to round. Koro Koro, followed by Marangi two minutes later, Kotiri following about two and a half minutes later. Wanderer was the 6th ■boat to round, and on the run to Jerningham improved her position, passing the Ailsa and drawing.close to tho Atalanta. The positions Were ’ unchanged on the. lead home. Waitangi crossed tho line at 5.27 mm., Marangi 3-29.55, Kotiri 5-31.45, Bona 5-39.15, Atalanta 3-42.16, Wanderer 5-42.50; Ailsa 5-44.38, Viola 5-55.25, and Wairoro 5-56.9. Tho result of tho race, with handicaps deducted, is as follows Wanderer (18 minutes), shrs 24min 50sec, 1; Marangi (4 minutes), shrs 25min 55sec, 2nd; Kotiri (8 minutes), shrs 26min 45seo, 3rd; Waitangi (scratch), shrs'27min Bseo, 4th; Atalanta (15 minutes), shra 27min 16sec, sth; Ailsa (13 minutes), shrs Slmin 3Ssec, Gth; Rona (6 minutes), shrs 33min Isec, 7th; Viola <2O minutes), shre 35min 25 sec, Bth; Wairere (16 minutes), shrs 40 min 9sec, 9th'.

Tho Marangi, on her showing in this race, during which she was beautifully handled throughout, should have accounted for tho Mills Cup, sailed a fortnight previously. Major A. G. Tether, ick acted as timo-koepor.
