SAMOAN TRIP
PARTY VISITS SAVAII. MOKOIA SAYS FAREWELL AT APIA. APIA, March 11. ’• The Mokoia arrived at Savaii on Thursday, and tho visitors were welcomed by the, Deputy-Administrator, Mr ‘•■.‘Williams,' who for, twenty years, under successive occupations, has controlled tho island. He .is a unique personality, and there is general regret at hie probable early retirement. In the morning there were ceremonial kava-drinking and speeches of greeting. Sir James Allen, in reply, said ho hoped that a wireless ■ telephone would :bo ~pvssi bfc„„ 'file party visited -a great lava,, bed, nine, miles wide, with a crater visible seven miles inland. Tho volcano until 1911 was intermittently active, and did much damage to plantations, and tho lava flowed out to sea over the barrier reef. The volcano is now quiescent. The party, observed the remains-of the upper story of a chureh over-which-tho lava swept. In • the-afternoou..i,„theuo„ was. a native feast evening the steamer ..returned to Apia, dropped the pilot, and said farewell. The Mokoia departed for Tonga, and is now duo at Auckland on the 23rd.
