CONFERENCE IN DUNEDIN. - -PER' PRESS ASSOCIATION 1 . DUNEDIN, February 24. The annual conference of the New Zealand Society of Engineers opened to-day. The .delegates were accorded a civic reception. - -The Mayor of Dunedin invited them to visit various places of. interest .in. the city, including tho Waipori pow,gr station, iho annual report of the,, council, which was adopted, stated that the membership was 241. A discussion, took place on the cnier clause of the Local Authorities Eingineers’ Act, that no local authority shall expend, or cause, or allow to bo expended, any part of its funds, whe. ther revenue or subsidy, on any public work unless suck work designed in its construction and maintenance is supervised by a properly qualified engineer. A draft bill was adopted in this respect. ~ The president brought up tho question of acquiring a permanent home for the society, and announced that they had an, opportunity securing from the Wellington City Council a site for buildings opposite Abo new Parliamentary Buildings. -This would probably cost £6500 sterling. It was suggested that the sum of £2300 might bo raised by means of debentures, and the balance by way ot mortgage and rents accruing from tho present property. A canvass among delegates resulted in £I6OO being subscribed. The'proposal was adopted. The next conference was fixed for Christchurch. Messrs A. J. Patterson, R. A. Holmes, and L. Berks were elected members of the council.
