“ A MERE SHAM ”
U.S. AND THE LEAGUE CANADIAN MINISTER’S CANDID STATE3IENT. ' ' THE DOMINION* VOTES. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright (Reuter's Telegram.) OTTAWA, February 19. The Hon. Arthur Meigheu (Minister for tho Interior), who is generally regarded as ‘the probable successor to Sir Robert Borden in the Premiership, in a speech referring to the United States Senate’s claim not to he bound by the decisions of the League of Nations, declared that membership of the League without being bound by its decisions was mere sham. Consequently the Senaltc’s proposed reservations would mean that Canada or the United States would have to step from the league. The Canadian Government had taken tho unequivocal and determined stand -that Canadian representation is essential if her right to nationhood is not to be abrogated. Canada demands and insists on her rights, and can recognise no league where Canada’s vote and representation is not conceded. WINNIPEG, February 19. The Minister for the Interior (Hon. A. Meigheu) in a speech, said he regretted that the United States was challenging Canada’s status as a nation. The position that England controls Canada is untenable, since the United States would dominate Hayti, San Domingo, and other nations, who are permitted a vote in the league.
