STAFF PICNICS

NATIONAL PROVIDENT AND FRIENDLY SOCIETIES. The third annual picnic of the National Provident and Friendly Societies Department was held at Day's Bay. Ihe sports were well contested, and the finishes reflected great credit on thei haiidicappers. Results are as under :—soyds ladies' swimming race: Miss Wilson 1, Miss Wiseman 2; 50yds men's swimming vace: JStr Dickson 1, Mr Seconi 2; 50yds ladies' championship: Miss Woodhonso 1, Miss Ferguson 2; 100yds men's championship: Mr Wogan 1, Mr Menzies 2; thread-the-needle race: Miss Ross and Mr Wogan; hop, step and jump: Mr Mullins 1, Mr Le-amev 2; whistling race: Miss Nichols and Mr Wogan; 75yds ladies' handicap: Mfiss Woodhouse 1, Misses Bridson. and Elllis, dead, heat, 2; 100yds men's handicap: Mr Eoson 1, Mr Mullins 2; three-legged race: Miss Woodhouse and Mr Jenkins: relay race: Misses Ellis- and Woodhouse, Messrs Seconi and Menzies; cigarette race, Miss Hastings and Mr Bates. Children';* races were also held. At the conclusion of the sports programme afternoon tea was held in the pavilion, after which Mrs Hayes presented the prizes, and Mr Hayes took advantage of the occasion to voice the staff's thanks to the secretary (Mr Spraggon) and committeo (Misses Hastings and Feeney, and Messrs Pollock, Bradley and Menzies). Tiie two latter were specially active on the sports programme. An , impromptu dance made a nappy ending to "a »«r----i'ect day." COMBINED PICNIC. The annual picnic of the employees of Messrs Haydon and Lubransky, Ltd., and Roberts, N.Z., Ltd., was held at Maidstone Park on Saturday in ideal weather. There was a good attendance, and the outing was thoroughly enjoyed. Wills (N.Z.), Ltd., and tne British Empire Trading -Company, Ltd., were entertained by the companies at a picnic and sports meeting at Irentnam racecourse. A handsome silver challenge cup, presented by the companies for annual competition, was won by the British Empire Trading Company, Ltd., who secured an aggregate of 16 points against Walls's S points. After the programme was concluded, the prizes were distributed by Mrs J. E Ramsay. Mr J. W. G. lirodie, in the course of a few remarks, congratulated the committee and staffs on the success of the picnic, which it is intended to make an annual affair.
