CROQUET TOURNAMENT

There was a very large gathering at tlie croquet courts at Petone on Saturday to watch the finals in several events of the tournament which has been taking place for the past week. The grounds wore very fast, and some really brilliant, play was to ho seen among the games ■ contested. The Dominion Club pairs, won ly Alesdames O’Donnell and Hamilton, wore watched with keen interest, and the win was very popular and met with much applause. In this game and in t&e Dominion open doubles, Mrs O’Donnell showed some really brilliant play. During the afternoon a presentation was made hv Mrs T. M. Wilford, vice-pre-sident of the Croquet Association, to the secretary for the tournament, Mrs Earle McKenzie, and 'the assistant secretary, Mrs Casey. After the recipients had replied, cheers wore given for these ladies, and also for Miss Wilkinson association treasurer, and for Mrs J. Smith, who has kept the lawns in such perfect order and assisted the ladies in many ways during tho tournament. Mr McEwan, Mayor of Petone, was among the visitors present. The tournament will ho continued to-day, anfl the contestants show no lack of keenness in spite of a week’s hard play. The results on Saturday were: Dominion Ladies' Championship, (final). —Mrs O’Donnell (Kclburn) played Mrs Johnson (HuttY. Each competitor had won every game in itheir respective sections, and tho final was watched with keen interest. The form displayed was above tho average seen a;t similar tournaments and the ovenlti was won by Mrs Johnson with the following scores: 26—21. and 26—17. Dominion Club Pairs.—Tho final competitors were Mesdames Smith and Hill (Ngaroma), and Alesdames O’Donnell and Hamilton (Kclburn). Mesdames Hill and Smith won tho first, game of tho rubber bv 26 —22; Mesdames Hamilton and O’Donnell the second game by 26 —14. Tho third game was of a brilliant nature, and took over throe hours to complete. Mrs Hamilton, at the commencement of tho contest, made a break of eleven hoops—tho best so far of tho tournament —and was closely followed by Mrs Smith, who made a break of six hoops. When* Airs Hamilton became a “rover” Mrs Smith succeeded in "pegging her out’ ’ and thus loft Airs O’Donnell “solo” with throe points to make, which she .accomplished by brilliant play and the gamo ended 26—16.
