NEW RAILWAY STATION
LAYING’ OF- FOUNDATION STONE. MAYOE’S PROPOSAL. The idea has been connived by the Mayor (.Ur J. F. Luke) that although the proposed new railway station at Wellington has not yet been commenced, the work could be sufficiently proceeded with that by the time .the X'nnce of Wales arrived m New Zealand he may be invited to lay tho' foundation stone of the new building. Tho Mayor has forwarded the following communication to tho Prime Minister:—"l would.strongly urge tho Government to make arrangements for tho Prince of Wales while in Wellington to lay the foundation stone of the proposed new railway station. If the plans are not sufficiently forward to place the same at tho entrance, it could bo placed in an equally conspicuous position—namely, the south-west corner of what will be tho block of buildings. 1 am sure you will agree with mo there can be no difficulty in determining the actual alignment on Fcatherston and Bunny streets, and a tablet placed upon a stone in the position 1 have suggested will bo a reminder not only to the travelling public on the railways, but would be strikingly visible to people proceeding to tho Ferry wharf, and to the general public in both the main thoroughfares.”
