■ NEWS AND JOTTINGS. (Special to tho "Times.") OTAiKI, February 1. v The S.M. Court at Otaki yesterday vai occupied for the greater part of the, day in hearing a case fn which J. Rp-bip-j son claimed from T. Diwyer, hotel pro-, prietor, of Wellington, the sum of vEesj for alleged damages to a butcher’s cart and horse by a cdilision with defendant's! car. Evidence for the plaintiff was to( the effect that the accident was entirely; due to tha driver of tho car, while the] evidence of the defence was the re-] verse. The occupants of the car swore, that it was pulled almost to the edge of! the, road, and that the driver, of. the! cart failed to .pull off sufficiently. Tha S.M. decided to view the locality J andgive judgment later. . . At the last meeting of the Obakii Town Board, the roadman reported that all roads, except Mill road,, were its fair order, and suggested calling tenders for 800 yards of maintenance metal, same, to bo in by next meeting.’ Ho reported' that the ilangauim roads were good,’ but that the bridge wais unsafe fori traffic ever 11 tons. He considered it needed attention. The Mangapunt creek was being attended to, -while pipeS" near the Central Hotel had been put in with advantage. He wished to know it the board was will ling to asphalt a portion of the streets owing to cement being unavailable—lt was decided -to call tenders -for tho metgl, and to asphalt from Cockrell’s corner to tike Jubilee Hotel corner (western side). It was decided to ask the roadmen to put in timesheets at each meeting. In answer to a question, the clerk said it was false that certain accounts were held bock as -stated. The lamp-lighter, on being questioned, said the carbide used was to blame for faulty street-lighting, while probably some of tho burners were out of order.
