■Sir Arthur Lees, Bt., who has been on a visit to New Zealand, is leaving for England by the Rimutaka. Air William G. Do Gruchy. assist-, ant manager of th© O. and D. Line, has gone on a trip to Dunedin. Mr Lawrence H. Tingey, of Messrs R. and E. Tingey and Company, Ltd., will leave for England and America on February 19th. Lieutenant-Colonel C. E'. Hercus, D. 5.0., N.Z.M.C., who has been demobilised, has taken up his duties as Assistant-Public Health Ofiicer for the Canterbury-West land Health District. A civic reception was tendered to Lieutenant-Commander R. Bourke, V. 0., D-S.O-, Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, R.N.V.R., in the. Councii Chambers, Christchurch, on Friday.

Archdeacon Tow good, who was knocked down in a street in Wanganui, arid as a result received a scalp wound, a sprained ankle, and a severe shaking, is reported to be improving in health. -fT'?,Mr W. Dalgliesh, who baa been a member of the Wanganui inspectorial staff of the Agricultural Department for some years past, has been promoted to the position of stock inspector of tile Nelson district, . and passed through Wellington the other day. - Mr E. Averill has been recommended for re-election to the Board of Agriculture by the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Society as representative for the whole ■of the 'district. Other societies concerned will consider the appointment at a conference to be held on February 30th. ' ' , • The position of Superintendent of Mercantile Marine, Wellington, has been filled by the promotion of Captain S. G. Stringer, formerly Assistant Superintendent. Captain J. W. Bur-, gess, formerly Surveyor of Ships, Wellington, has become Assistant Superin-' tendent. ' \ The death of Captain John. William*. Millman, formerly of the Union Com»| pany, took place at the Wellington'’ Hospital on Friday. Captain Millmanj had. been suffering for some years withj partial paralysis. He commanded eev-J eral of the Union Company’s smaller, cargo steamers and was well known atf all New Zealand porta. He retired from the sea several years ago. . '- v: “•*' In connection with the transfer from Newtown of Archdeacon Devoy, it may truly bo said that many n distinguished churchman • has had his first training in early priesthood from Archdeacon Devoy, among them being Hi» Grace Archbishop O’Shea. Owing to the rapid extension of the Church in Wellington South it was deemed necessary to cut up that extensive district into three parishes, and owing to there now being a more plentiful supply of the secular order of priests, the Marist Fathers are relinquishing the charge of. Kilbirnie and Newtown and will in future administer Island Bay, whero' they will establish their North Mission-house, of which, Archdeacon; Devoy will take charge, and will havb, associated with him tho r ßev.
