Miss Philpott gave her song pretty treatment and she showed much promise as a vocalist. Her articulation was good, especially in tho word "ring" occurring in the test piece. Miss} Amies possessed a voice of nice quality and gave a commendable performance, but sho showed one or two faults which needed correction. Miss Wolfgang was a little husky, -but showed good expression. Tho performance was quite an appealing one VOCAL SOLO and Accompaniment (ladies and (or) gentlemen, own. selection)'— ! Miss M. H. B. The competition, he said, was a very enjoyable one. The winner had a particularly brilliant voice, though she was a trifle unsteady and did not make sufficient use of the covering 'tones. Miss Aslin put in some good work, and made a very creditable effort. The accompanist, however, was too subdued. Mrs Cameron was a little husky at the start; she sang with much feeling, but did not open her mouth sufficiently. • RECITATION, New Zealand author, "The Angel" (Mary Coburne-Veel) : Miss Fanny Kutner (Wellington), 81 points 1 Miss Bessie Thomson (Dunedin), 79 points SMrs W. J. Forsyth (Masterton), 77 points • 3 Mr J. H. Hopkins, of Melbourne, who acted as judge in this class, said that the"piece required a good deal of subdued expression; some of the singers were inclined to make their recitation a tittle too dramatic and descriptive. Miss Kutner's emphasis was a little weak, but she showed good pausation, and her gestures were restrained. Miss Thomson's voice needed more resonance, and «he required to put more light and shade into her work. Mrs Fawcett's delivery was inclined to be jerky, but her manner wa3 very deliberate. Mrs Cameron showed good dramatic fervour and her artistry secured her the first place. Mm Aslin had a very brilliant voice indeed. ' She was. a trifle out of pitch at times, however, and showed a tendency to show her eyes too much. ' Miss Castle also had a nice voice, but it was a trifle husky at the break; her expression was nice and sho showed good feeling.

SONG, New Zealand composer (gentlomen, own selection): — Mr C.'Rishworth (Lower Hutt), "Waiata Poi" (Hill), 130 points 1 Mr Leigh Dew (Gisborne), "Home, Little Maori, Home," 118 points 2 Mr Alfred Mottershead (Levin), "My Fairest Child" (Hill) 3

Mr Rish worth, according to the judge, had a good natural voice, but he was a' little self-conscious, and would do better if he dropped this.
