MANAWATU SHOW

PEOPLE'S DAY. (From Our Special,' Reporter.) PAL-MERSTON N., November 7. The weather is ideal for People's Day at the show and there is a large attendance of visitors. In addition to the stock and other exhibits, the attractions are ring events, comprising jumping and riding exhibitions, for which there is keen competition. In the afternoon a grand parade ot animals took place and made a magnificent display. The Mauawatu Spring Show is looked upon as the largest of its kind in the Dominion and authorities recognise that the time is drawing near when its sphere of influence will be extended to encompass the city of Wellington. When that day arrives the name will have to be altered to include Wellington in order (that the show may eventually become the recognised North Island exhibition of shock, farming impSementa and productions. A noticeable feature of the show ia tho poor entries of farm horses and general Utility breeds. Successive shows do not bring any appreciable improvement in this respect. The brooding of farm horses ia worthy of encouragement, and experts state that the conditions existing in the North Island are as well adapted as those in the South for this purpose. Canterbury, howevor, holds prido of place in the breeding of draught horses and some fine specimens are to bo seen on exhibition at the Canterbury shows. The exhibits of Romney sheep at Palnierston, according to the judges, have reached a high standard of excellence, and this class of sheep is coming into even' greater favour than in tho Tho breeding is carried out on scientific lines, and tho larger breeders retain high-salaried herdsmen to manage the Hocks. The prize animals are oared for after the Banner of a thoroughbred i horse, and aro rugged and housed. When being prepared for exhibition the ends of the wool are, in the majority of cases, snipped off and tho fleece is sprayed. In order to oncourage the smaller farmer who is not in a position to engage a herdsman, the M'anawatu Association added a class to tho programme for Romney Marsh sheep under natural conditions, and the innovation will give a stimulus to breeders. Mr A. Matthews, of Featherston, the judge of this section, r.tated that he was highly pleased with the class of sheep exhibitod. They were of good quality, and some of them would have compared moro than favourably with those in tho prepared classes. The only weak class was the aged rams. • A LARGE ATTENDANCE. 7>r»K)« Association. PALMERSTON N., November 7.
