Mr Merries gave an' assurance that the Government would take np the measure, and progress was reported on this bill also. A SECOND READING. The Toll-Gates Abolition'Bill (Mr C A. "Wilkinson, Egmont) was read a second time without comment on the voices. Mr Hemes then moved the adjournment of the House. Mr R. A. Wright (Wellington Suburbs) strongly objected to an adjournment before his Maori' AVar Modal Bill, next on the lift-, had been road a second time. Mr G. J. Anderson (Mataura) supported. „ Mr A r ., (Bay, ql Islands) suggested that a later, opportunity should bo given to private members to make further progress with their measures. Air Merries said that he would bo very glad to afford the further - opportunity askcdfpr, but the Prime Minis-, ter himself 'could not promise such an' opportunity until it was seen later what was the position in regard to tho important Government business yet to come on. He would, hbwever, represent the matter to the Prime Minister, with a recommendation that an opportunity should he given if possible. Some of the measures might bo taken up by the Government, and that would give them a bettor chance. At 12.15 a.m., tho adjournment was can-led on the voices, the House to meet at 2.30 this afternoon.
