RIFLE SHOOTING

WELLINGTON UNION JUNIOE SHIELD MATCH FIEED ON SATTJEDAf. The junior shield match of the "Wellington Bifie, Club's XJnioa was fired on Saturday afternoon. Pour teams, representing tbo Petone, KaTori, Suburbs and Old Navals Eifle Clubs competed. Although the weather was fine throughout, there was just sufficient variation in the light northerly breeze to keep competitors on the alert for the, unwelcome "magpie," and there were perhaps as many of these registered during the afternoon as there were bull's-eyes. The match resulted in a wtn for the Karon Rifle Club, -which had succeeded in wanning the senior shield the previous wek: This is the first occasion on which both the senior and junior Shields have been won bv the same club. Commencing at the 300 Yards range, the Petone team quvckly set the main and finished the distance, with a lead of five pointTover the Karori and Suburbs teams The Karori team made the steadiest shooting at £OO yards and passed Petone's score by seven points on the two ranges. Suburbs in.the meantime had made up the margin on the Petone team's first range score and again two teams were tieing for I second place. With the hardest distance stv.ll to go tfte chances were'"good for nnv one of these three teams, and even when each team had onlv one man Wt to fire at 600 yards the. result was still an doubt, the Potone team having drawn up to,within 'throe points of Karori. The latter team ivas fortunate, however, in having in BiSeumn W. Skogg a finisher, ■who. wound up his score with three bulh> cyes and with a range score of 31 advanced hr.s team's lead bv a further nine points Tho Petone Club, which had been beaten for second place . in the senior shield match bv one point from tho Suburbs Club, avenged its defeat bv headinsr the latter club by two points in the iunior match. The Old Navals Clubv though not nearby so strong in point of numbers as the other local clubs, lacks nothing in enthusiasm and. will without doubt have a better sav in these matches in the future. The union's trophy for tho highest scorer in Saturday's, match was won bv Eiflemotv 'W. Skegg. of the Karori Club. Tho duties of rnnso officer were again most capablv performed bv Mr H. Haw thorn, and Mr W. Cowman's work an

trendi officer added materially to th« sucoeos of tbe competition. , ' Following :> are the detailed scoro»:— Karori Eifle Club.
